free partitioning software

free partitioning software

I want to partition my hd but can't afford to purchase the software and was wondering about free products like SwissKnife? Has anyone heard or tried this or any others? -- beekum57

Apparently (although I personally have not used it) Vista's disc management plug-in can do this. Also try Ranish, as it come recommended by many users here.

You don't really need to buy anything to partition and format drives. You can use the Disk Management tool in Vista or XP.

Doesn't the XP version wipe the data when partitioning and resizing? Although not very clear in the post, I assume the OP currently has an XP box with one hard drive and wants to partition the drive to install Vista without spending any money.

Oh yeah, I guess I should have mentioned that. It's not "nice" partitioning. It's more like sledge-hammer partitioning. You only use it on new drives or when you want to wipe a drive clean and and start over.

Now that the OP is staring at a blinking cursor...

Ok if he has a backup image. Image can be restored to a smaller partition (provided it can hold the files!).

Yep-- which is the usual scenario here because people are trying to install Vista and often don't have the extra box or HD--so Ranish would be ideal. XP DMgmt is not fault tolerant--and he wants to dual boot and doesn't of course have Vista on the box so can't use it's DM.

This works well.
